(July 8)[Notes:all video and images from NOAA]The first named storm of the hurricane season is getting weaker.Bertha had swelled into a Category 3 storm on Monday but forecasters in at the National Hurricane center say it has dropped back down to a Cat 2.As of Tuesday morning it has maximum sustained winds of 105 miles per hour, with some higher gusting.Bertha is swirling out in the Atlantic, far away from any land.Forecasters say they think it will continue to weaken over the next couple of days as it drifts toward Bermuda.They say it is still too soon to say when of even if it will make landfall.However they are urging residents in Bermuda to keep a close eye on storm and review their preparation plans. ___ ___, The Associated Press. They are urging people to monitor the storm's progress closely. (July 11)[Notes:all images from NOAA]Hurricane Bertha is already having an effect on Bermuda as it inches closer to the island.The storm has lost some of its strength from earlier in the week but remains a Category One hurricane with top sustained winds at about 85 miles per hour.Bertha is about 350 miles southeast of Bermuda and is moving toward it at seven miles per hour.The storm is already producing some large swells and high surf there that are expected to continue for the coming days.Forecasters say they may issue a tropical storm watch for the island but add it's still not clear just how close Bertha will come.For now they are urging residents to keep a close eye on its progress. ___ ___, The Associated Press. The storm's maximum sustained winds are blowing near 120 miles an hour. Forecasters say it is not posing any threat to land now ... But they do expect it to head toward Bermuda. The National Hurricane Center says Bertha should stay at the category three intensity for a day or two. Tropical storm Bertha is approaching warmer waters and forecasters says it'll probably gain strength as it moves along.On Sunday afternoon, Bertha was centered about a thousand miles east of the northern Leeward Islands in the Caribbean...And maximum sustained winds were near 50 miles per hour. Some gusts were even higher.The storm is moving west at about 20 miles per hour but it's still too early to tell if or exactly where it may hit land. Arthur...which was the first named storm this year...formed in the Atlantic the day before the season officially started on June 1 and soaked the Yucatan Peninsula.
