Korean citizens under the goverment attack : two high schoolers possibly lost their eye sight; one ex-soldier who tried to protect citizens got broken ribs and is in critical condition now; and total 222 people got arrested The rally against the beef - of cattle older than 30 months - import! from the U.S, sparked by the rough-and-ready negotiation between Korean and US goverment, was again held May 31,2008. It first started in the form of a peaceful candlelight protest by the citizens who voluntarily gathered at Gwanghwamun, the main square in Seoul. Like other candlelight protest held several times before, for other reasons including one against impeachment of the ex-president Roh Muhyun, the protests had been sedentary and peaceful. However, the police force, of around 10,000 police soldiers , were mobilized to suppress citizens who started taking to the street, in a blaze of anger as to the government that does not seem to take account the public dissent, still pushing to announce the deal. More combat police, armed with helmets, shields, and batons, were mobilized against the protesters after 6 o'clock, June 1. From the midnight until early in the morning on June 1, they started to attack citizens with water cannon and low-level tear gas, even breaking the law by aiming the water cannon directly at the citizens within 5m of distance. The illegal and increasingly violent action of the police resulted in many victims including women and high-schoolers. A young woman, who lost consciousness during the violent repression process, got arrested and sent into the police van instead of to a nearby hospital. The blood and sever wounds of the protesters didn't stop the violence from the police. As the violence escalate, many citizens pleaded with the police to let them send the victims to nearby hospitals. Two high schoolers reportedly are at stake to lose their eye sight as a result of the water cannon directly shot at their eyes. The doctor who examined the students expressed his medical opinion that their visual nerves are severely damaged. The police also attacked the ex-soliders, who went on to the front line, trying to protect the citizens, and one of them had his rib broken and his lung torn. He is in a critical condition at the moment. Pregnant women were also arrested; and, pictures were released that contain the scene where a young woman got sexsually harassed by the combat police during the arrest. The police force from all across the country have been called on to come to Seoul. Please do listen to our outcry to protect our country.
