Cybercrime and effects on economy A Purdue University expert on computer security says that as cybercrime takes on a more global nature, it's more important than ever that governments around the world work together to combat the problem. "We're seeing much larger scale fraud and criminal behavior that has an international aspect to it," says Eugene H. Spafford, the executive director of Purdue's CERIAS (Center for Education and Research in Information Assurance and Security). "We're also seeing a larger amount of espionage, both industrial espionage and nationally funded espionage. So, it's increasingly vital that global leaders take these threats seriously, put some resources into fighting cybercrime and cooperate with one another." http://news.uns.purdue.edu/x/2008b/080825TG12-SpaffordSecuri.html Tags:[][Purdue][cybercrime][cybersecurity][computers][economy][consumers][global][cooperation] |

Testing, diversity, educating rural students for high-tech f A national education accountability law may be forcing teachers to focus on the basics at the expense of more complex skills such as team building and creativity, says a Purdue University expert. Sidney Moon, associate dean of learning and engagement in Purdue's College of Education and a professor of educational studies, says that six years into the federal reform of the public educational system known as No Child Left Behind, problems persist in schools. http://news.uns.purdue.edu/x/2008b/080811TG12-MoonEducation.html Tags:[][Purdue][education][testing][diversity][rural][students][high-tech][teachers][No][Child][Left][Behind] |

Purdue's Herrick Labs turning 50, eyes future expansion Purdue University's Ray W. Herrick Laboratories, a hub of industry- oriented research in areas ranging from advanced automotive technologies to "smart" buildings, turns 50 in July with an eye toward the future. "It isn't easy to balance the needs of industry, academics and basic research, but that's what Purdue has accomplished at Herrick Labs over the past 50 years," said Patricia Davies, Herrick director and a professor of mechanical engineering. "The labs have developed a formula for satisfying the practical requirements of industry without compromising the academic standards of Purdue's faculty and students." http://news.uns.purdue.edu/x/2008b/080702DaviesHerrick.html Tags:[][Purdue][advanced][automotive][technologies][smart][buildings][Herrick][Labs] |

Green, more efficient computing Although environmental and business concerns can sometimes be in conflict, Purdue University's vice president for information technology and chief information officer says reducing energy consumption is a required strategic enterprise goal. "This is one case in which the goals of environmentalists and the goals of business managers are in synch," Gerry McCartney says. "In the 1990s, the biggest challenge in enterprise computing was finding enough data center space for the computers or finding qualified staff to run the equipment. The biggest challenge now is energy use." http://news.uns.purdue.edu/x/2008b/080728TG12-McCartneyEnerg.html Tags:[][Purdue][Business][IT][research][computing][energy-saving] |

Housing market represents crisis, opportunity A Purdue University economist says the U.S. housing market is bucking conventional wisdom this year. In most years, says Charlene Sullivan of the Krannert School of Management, home sales are either characterized as a buyer's market or a seller's market, depending on interest rates, housing starts and the state of the economy. http://news.uns.purdue.edu/x/2008b/080721TG12-SullivanHousin.html Tags:[][Purdue][mortgage][foreclosures][Fannie][Mae][Freddie][Mac][bankruptcy][housing] |

Political conventions more show than substance Both the Democratic and Republican national conventions have more to do with the parties' image than the delegates' preferences for president, says a Purdue University political scientist. "The conventions are like greeting cards to Americans from their political parties," says James McCann, professor of political science. "There was a time and place when conventions really did matter in candidate selection. Think back to the days of the so-called 'smoke-filled backrooms' where a group of party elites would decide whom to nominate. But that has not been true in our lifetimes. http://news.uns.purdue.edu/x/2008b/080714TG12-McCannConventi.html Tags:[][Purdue][politics][conventions][immigrants][elections][election][history] |

High energy prices bringing revolution to agriculture Demand for biofuels, grain and farm land is driving a revolution in American agriculture, a Purdue agricultural economist says. Wallace Tyner says the demand for corn to use for ethanol production means farmers are transferring more land from other land uses into corn production. Even larger corn crops will be raised for ethanol production until the federal goal of 15 billion gallons of ethanol by 2015 is reached, he says. http://news.uns.purdue.edu/x/2008b/080707TG12-TynerEthanol.html Tags:[][biofuel][ethanol][agriculture][Purdue][grain][corn][production][prices] |

Empowerment, education critical to health-care future Improved information technology will give patients a greater role in deciding their health-care options, but it also will create challenges, says a Purdue University science expert. Jeffrey S. Vitter, the Frederick L.
