All hands to the pump There's no water at all in Oumar's village in northern Senegal, so he drives seven kilometres to the nearest well. Punam Since her mother died, nine-year-old Punam in Nepal has shouldered the responsibility for caring for her two younger siblings. Karrus' dream comes to life Karrus Hayes left Liberia in 1996 when the civil war intensified. He fled by boat and ended up at the Buduburam refugee camp in Ghana. Today, more than 45,000 refugees live there permanently. Through sheer dedication, he has managed to raise enough funds to set up a free school for over 500 Liberian children living in the camp. He strongly supports free education and feels it is the only means to empower the younger generation. What's cooking? Water, clay and cow dung - that's all you need to make an energy-saving stove. Hadja Diallo has helped to make nearly a hundred of them in villages in Senegal in west Africa. It takes her an hour and a half to mix the ingredients and mould the stoves. Then she leaves them for a week and after that they're ready to be used. The stoves make cooking much faster and use less wood -- crucial in an area where wood is scarce.
